Saturday Family Jazz Sessions
Junior jazz aficionados spend Saturday mornings singing, playing, and preparing for a lifetime of music appreciation. Strathmore’s fun, creative, kid-friendly series features renowned jazz singer Rochelle Rice and multi-instrumentalist Seth Kibel.
Recommended for ages 3–8.
All attendees, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults must also have a ticket.
Children 1 year old and under will be admitted for free, but they do require a ticket to help us manage attendance and be sure we don't go over our maximum allowed capacity. If you plan to bring a child 1 year old or younger to this performance, please call our ticket office to reserve a special free ticket at 301.581.5100. A limited quantity of free tickets will be available.
Doors open 30 minutes before the show. There will be no food and beverage service, but Pike & Rose's many restaurants will be open for pre- and post-concert dining!
March 10: Jump, Jive & Boogie-Woogie with Daryl Davis
Explore the elements of boogie woogie music, starting from its roots when it was performed by soloists. Then find out how it was incorporated into popular music in swing orchestras, and the birth of rock 'n roll. Led by pianist and AIR mentor Daryl Davis.
March 24: Bloomin' with Billie with Rochelle Rice
Kids and caregivers will be singing and swinging with Rice in this interactive exploration of the life and music of one of the most influential singers of our time, Billie Holiday.
April 7: Flavoring the Melody with Seth Kibel
A central ingredient in all forms of jazz is improvisation, or spontaneous composition. In this program, Strathmore Artist in Residence mentor Seth Kibel will demonstrate how jazz musicians take familiar melodies from nursery rhymes to movie themes and make them their own.
April 21: I’ve Got Rhythm with Seth Kibel
Rhythm is a fundamental part of jazz. In this session, Kibel will teach rhythmic patterns on various percussion instruments and get your family moving. Enjoy the tunes of Duke Ellington, let the music inspire your moves, and learn how your movement can steer the music in new directions!
