You may know them from their onscreen and soundtrack contributions to O Brother Where Art Thou, but the Fairfield Four has been singing a cappella gospel since 1921. This historical ensemble, through its many incarnations, has been singularly important in revitalizing and preserving the oldest style of traditional African American spiritual and gospel singing. The current members of the Fairfield Four are Joe Thompson (a relative of the Fairfield Four’s founding Carrethers brothers), Levert Allison, Larrice Byrd, Sr., and Bobbye Sherrell. Their soulful voices create rich harmonies that are as soothing as a cool breeze on a hot summer day.
