with Lea Morris, Calista Garcia, and Peter Garza
If you’re naming a songwriting competition after great American songwriter Fred Ebb, the bar is high. This evening at AMP celebrates and showcases the winners of the 3rd annual Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards.
Lea MorrisMorris, the 2017 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards Grand Prize Winner, grew up singing with her mother and uncle’s a cappella group, the Jones Family Gospel Singers. Morris discovered the guitar at 13, teaching herself to play through songwriting. An alumni of Strathmore’s Artist in Residence program, she has shared the stage with Odetta, Mavis Staples, and (cut the word modern) troubadours Dar Williams and Anthony Hamilton. Morris has performed at the area’s most prestigious venues including Strathmore, The Kennedy Center, The Birchmere, and Wolf Trap, as well as venues throughout Europe.
Garcia won the top Young Songwriter prize at the 2017 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting awards. Named one of “Arlington’s Hottest Musicians” by Arlington Magazine in 2015, she has performed at venues including the 9:30 Club, The Fillmore Silver Spring, and Amazon’s Seattle headquarters for their first “Spotlight Performance.” Garcia’s all-girl rock band, The Diamond Dolls, were two-time winners of Bach to Rock’s Battle of the Bands.
Peter Garza (with Band of Us)
Garza, a 2017 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards Finalist, has been writing songs and playing the piano since age 16. In 2015, as an avenue to explore and further his musical ideas, Garza formed the Peter Michael Band. Now called Band of Us, the group has continued to build on its success and has played at numerous venues throughout the DC area.
